Solar Power
Solar panels use silicon sheets to turn sunlight into DC current. That current flows to an inverter which changes the DC power to synch with the electric grid. In a battery-based system, the inverters change the current to the correct voltage to charge a battery bank.
Solar power in the arctic climate
The world’s northern latitudes offer a unique opportunity to take advantage of solar power. The sun shines on these areas little to none in winter months, but excessively in summer months. With the high cost of electricity and concern over climate change, solar power offers a clean solution to the cost of energy.
The CCHRC offers information on solar power for circumpolar regions. The CCHRC Research and Testing Facility itself has a number of solar arrays, which it tests throughout the year. Data from these arrays or other information on solar power is available here.
