Job Title: Architect/ architectural designer, Project Manager

Reports to: Sustainable Northern Communities Director

Purpose: To manage projects, design buildings appropriate for northern climates, consult with partners on energy efficiency and construction, develop construction documents and associated graphics, conduct community research, and write associated reports.
Scope of Duties:

  • Active design team member on Sustainable Northern Communities (SNC) Program
  • Collaborate as a team member with CCHRC staff, project partners, and industry advisors on a variety of CCHRC projects.
  • Project management and support on various SNC projects including:
    • Overseeing project timelines, budgets, and workflow
    • Being primary contact for clients and partners related to project
  • Create design documents, construction documents, renderings and presentations for the SNC Program and other CCHRC programs
  • Create materials lists for developed projects
  • Develop proposals for clients and grants
  • Conduct community design charrettes  and research in rural and remote Alaskan villages and associated reporting
  • Assist in the on-site management of construction projects
  • Work with CCHRC teams to research and develop innovative building systems and techniques
  • Present work and research at conferences and seminars
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in architecture or related field
  • Desire/interest in building science and community development
  • Experience in project management
  • Strong, effective oral and written skills
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy
  • Good interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with CCHRC staff and partner organizations
  • Desire and willingness to work with indigenous rural communities of Alaska and the circumpolar north
  • Ability to travel to remote villages and temporarily live with access to minimal facilities (such as using outhouses and sleeping on classroom floors)
  • Have proficiency using SketchUp
  • Knowledge of autoCAD or similar computer drafting program
  • Experience using ArchiCAD or similar BIM software (Revit, etc)
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite Programs
  • Experience and familiarity with Apple Computers and Operating Systems preferred
  • Have an adventurous spirit
