Preventing ice dams and frozen vents
October 25th, 5:30-7:30pm
Instructor: Emmett Leffel, Alaska Thermal Imaging, LLC
Description: Learn about common roof issues caused by cold temperatures and snow loads. Emmett will focus on the causes of ice dams on the roof, frozen sewer vents and how to remediate problems when they occur. He will also discuss air leaks, heavy snow loads, and mold in the ceiling. Students will learn how to prevent these issues in new construction, and how to retrofit an existing structure so they don’t occur again.
Make a back-up plan for power outages
November 1st, 5:30-7:30pm
Instructor: Paul Koop, Bright Electric Services
Description: Learn how to provide electricity to your home during a power outage. Paul will explain how to design electric circuitry to accommodate back-up power in new construction, as well as how to retrofit an existing home to meet the best practices for running a generator. He will discuss choosing, storing, and safely operating a portable electric generator.
Introduction to Permafrost
November 8th, 5:30-7:30pm

Description: This class will provide an overview of permafrost. It will help you to know what to look for when deciding to build in a certain location and provide suggestions for how to go about building on permafrost.

Instructor: Bruno Grunau, CCHRC
Description: This class will provide tools to help deal with building on permafrost. It will describe a step-by-step way of evaluating permafrost, developing ways to build on it, and mitigating problems caused by permafrost.
